Using administrative linked data, this study found that substance misuse and homelessness together increase health inequalities.

This study investigates the relationship between co-occurring homelessness and substance misuse on the use of secondary care in Wales.

Main findings

Individuals in substance misuse treatment with experience of homelessness, compared to those without it, are more likely to:

  • frequently attend the Emergency Department
  • be diagnosed with skin diseases, injuries, and mental and behavioural disorders
  • have higher hospital admission rates
  • experience longer hospital stays
