Education grants

Grants and funding programmes are available to improve education in Wales.

Whilst the majority of education funding is distributed to local authorities, the following schemes are open to applications.

The school uniform grant helps eligible pupils acquire school uniform.

The Education Maintenance Allowance (external link) provides £30 per week to eligible students to help with the costs of further education.

The Welsh Government Learning Grant Further Education (external link) is an income-assessed grant of up to £1,500 to encourage more people to continue with their education.

Disabled Students’ Allowances (external link) help with additional costs you have to pay as a direct result of your disability, mental health condition or specific learning difficulty while studying.

The Welsh Government provides direct grants to Further Education institutions.

Education grants made to local authorities include:

  • Flying Start targeted Early Years programme for families with children under 4 years old in some of the most deprived areas of Wales.
  • The Foundation Phase Grant to increase staff and resources in the classroom.
  • The School Effectiveness Grant and Pupil Deprivation Grant paid to regional education consortia to improve literacy and numeracy, and reduce the impact of poverty on educational attainment.
  • Learning Pathways 14-19 to provide wider choice and access to learner support services for young people.
