Economy and Infrastructure Secretary, Ken Skates today enjoyed a spin in a low carbon, hydrogen fuelled, car of the future.
The Rasa is the first car of its kind in the world and was designed and built in Powys as part of a £3.5m project. It is the work of Llandrindod Wells based, Riversimple Engineering , a green team who are now employing 23 people.
Economy Secretary Ken Skates said:
“I am so proud that the Rasa has been designed and developed here in Wales.
“It really is an innovative machine - the first of its kind in the world – and one boasting innovative low carbon technology.
“This is exactly the sort of Research and Development technology that we want to attract to Wales and I wish Riversimple continuing success as they work towards developing and expanding their business.”
The Riversimple Rasa prototype, which is embarking on a promotional tour of UK cities, can do 0-50 mph in 8 seconds and can reach speeds of up to 60mph. It is about three times as efficient as the hydrogen cars currently on the market.
The Rasa is powered by hydrogen fuel cells with a regenerative braking system to recapture energy that is stored in a bank of super capacitors to provide power for acceleration.
Hugo Spowers, Technical Director and founder of Riversimple said the car is nippy, fuel efficient, stylish and distinctive. It was designed by Chris Reitz, one of Europe’s most respected car designers with a track record at Fiat and Alfa Romeo.
Riversimple’s long term aim is to build a production facility with a capacity of 5000 cars per annum.
