Along with DEFRA, we aim to introduce the mandatory electronic identification (BEID) of cattle in Wales and England.

BEID  will require farmers to fit a statutory EID tag in the ears of calves born after the implementation date. Two different types of radio frequency identification (RFID) technologies can be used with cattle. They are: low frequency (LF) and ultra-high frequency (UHF).

To help inform decision making, Welsh Government and Defra commissioned Harper Adams University to carry out pilot projects. Pilot projects were carried out on farms and in abattoirs in Wales and England, and in markets in England.

The Welsh pilot project focussed on LF technology and did not include UHF. Decisions about UHF in Wales are being informed by evidence from English trials. The Joint Final Report covers both the Welsh and English pilot projects.
