Investigating the likelihood of substance misuse related events in care-experienced children.
This study uses linked administrative data to investigate how being a child looked after influences the likelihood of getting involved with substance misuse.
Main findings
- A child looked after had nearly 8 times higher risk of substance misuse than a child not looked after.
- Sex, ethnicity and deprivation also contributed to this risk among those looked after and not looked after.
- Socially unacceptable behaviour and adoption disruption (categories of need) increased the risk of substance misuse among children looked after.
- Residential settings and independent living (placement types) also increased the risk of substance misuse in children looked after.
