Definition

A general term used to describe the removal of microbial contamination to make an item safe, meaning that it no longer poses a risk. It is often used to refer to equipment or the environment and does not necessarily mean that they are sterile. Decontamination can be a combination of processes, including cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation.
