Dafydd Elis-Thomas AM

Dafydd Elis-Thomas
Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport.

Lord Elis-Thomas was born in 1946, in Carmarthen. He represents the Dwyfor Meirionnydd constituency in the National Assembly for Wales as an Independent member.  He is also a member of the House of Lords.  He was elected by his colleagues as ‘Llywydd’ or Presiding Officer of the National Assembly for Wales from its inception in 1999 to 2011.

He has been a member of the Arts Council of Wales and the British Film Institute as well as Chairman of the Welsh Language Board and Chairman of Wales Screen.  

Lord Elis-Thomas enjoys trail running and hill walking.

  • Tourism in and to Wales, including the marketing and promotion of Wales as a tourist destination through Visit Wales and regulation of the tourism industry
  • National strategy and policy for the historic environment in Wales
  • Remit of Cadw
  • National Botanic Garden of Wales
  • National Museums and Galleries of Wales
  • National Library of Wales
  • Development of a National Archive for Wales 
  • Non-devolved cultural property legislation and tax relief schemes
  • Oversight of the distribution of Lottery funding within Wales
  • Elite Sports
  • National strategy and policy for community sport, physical activity and active recreation in Wales, including sponsorship of the Sports Council for Wales
