The Bill will help to protect children’s rights. If passed, it will not create a new offence, it will remove the common law defence of reasonable punishment.

Removing the defence of reasonable punishment is a long standing commitment and part of our national strategy, “Prosperity for All.  We consulted in 2018 with different partners, communities and individuals.
