Welsh Language Project in Patagonia

Students from Patagonia hold the flag of Argentina
The Welsh Assembly Government funds this unique initiative to boost and sustain the Welsh language in the Chubut Province of Patagonia in Argentina.

The project will receive £162,000 between 2009 and 2012. The Welsh Government’s support for the Welsh language in Patagonia programme has been running since 1997.

The project pays for:

  • Teachers to key target communities.
  • The development of native teachers.
  • The establishment of structured courses.
  • The promotion of Welsh language activities.

The project is managed for the Assembly Government by the British Council in collaboration with the Wales-Argentina Society and Cardiff University's Welsh Language Teaching Centre for Adults.
