Rail Services for the Future, which is aimed at passengers, outlines the Welsh Government’s requirements for the services and gives insight into the solutions being sought from bidders.

Four companies are currently bidding to provide the rail service and to become a partner in the development of the South Wales Metro.  Bidders are each detailing the plans they would put in place to meet the Welsh Government’s requirements.

The Welsh Government is requiring enhanced services, improvements to passenger comfort and quality of service, and transformation of the on-board experience. Better trains, stations and information systems are sought, particularly with regards to access for disabled people. The service is being developed with long-term needs and benefits in mind, with sustainable and ethical considerations underpinning the solutions being developed.

Transport for Wales recently undertook extensive consultation across Wales and the border into England, on behalf of the Welsh Government and the Department for Transport.  Findings from the consultation have been instrumental in informing the requirements for the new services, helping to ensure the development of a rail service that truly meets people’s needs.
