Taxis and private hire vehicles

Taxi and private hire services are an essential part of the public transport system. They enhance the public transport system and enable social inclusion, particularly for disabled people.

Local authorities in Wales are responsible for licensing these vehicles and  drivers in their local areas. Currently there are more than 9000 drivers in Wales licensed to provide taxi and private hire vehicles in Wales, with more than a third of these in Cardiff and Swansea.

Different local authorities take different approaches to licensing these vehicles. They are advised to follow the Department for Transport’s best practice guidance on taxi and private hire vehicle licensing (external link).
