The EWS CL 37 by Newport road flyover in Cardiff

We want to grow the freight industry in Wales.

The freight industry makes a significant contribution to our economy. We want a modern, efficient and sustainable freight system.

The Wales Freight strategy was published in May 2008.

Wales Freight Working Group

We set up the Wales Freight Working Group to us on issues affecting the future of freight traffic.

The group included freight experts and industry representatives. It built upon the specific recommendations from the Freight Task and Finish Group. It focused on how we can  grow intermodal container traffic and on the balance between passenger and freight needs.

The group submitted its report in April 2016. This report had 4 key recommendations. These were to:

  1. analyse opportunities and challenges for growing intermodal freight networks and out of town hubs
  2. consider the need for appropriate loading gauge capability along the entire south Wales main line to efficiently allow intermodal container traffic
  3. develop a business case for a third Menai crossing for freight
  4. continue to advise us on proposals under development within the UK Freight Strategy

Freight Task and Finish Group

The Freight Task & Finish Group was set up in 2013 to advise us on strategic issues affecting freight transport.

The group focused on regions with high demand and capacity for freight. It also looked at how we can improve freight to support Enterprise Zones other commercial and business centers.

The group submitted its report in March 2014. This report contained 24 recommendations -  the majority of which were accepted by Welsh Ministers.
