The .cymru and .wales domains help strengthen Wales’ online identity.

Within these Top Level Domains (TLDs) there are two Second Level Domains (SLDs), llyw.cymru and gov.wales, which we reserved for use by Welsh public sector organisations.

We are strongly encouraging local authorities and other eligible public sector organisations in Wales to adopt these domain names.  The use of these domains reassures users that the service is run by a publically-accountable organisation that they can identify and contact offline.

We chair the Welsh Naming and Approvals Committee (WNAC), which is responsible for approving or rejecting requests for:

  • new .llyw.cymru and.gov.wales domain names
  • changing ownership of .llyw.cymru and .gov.wales domain names.

WNAC also makes sure that .llyw.cymru and .gov.wales URLs are used in accordance with the policy on registering and running these domains. The committee meets annually to review the policy and to discuss any related matters.

For more information about applying read the policy for registering and running domains on .llyw.cymru and .gov.wales.
