New permitted development rights covering installing renewable energy technologies on non-domestic premises will come into force in Wales on 05 October 2012.

Part 43 (installation of non-domestic micro generation equipment) of Schedule 2 of the General Permitted Development Order has been introduced. It allows the installation of:

  • solar panels on flat and pitched roofs;
  • stand alone solar panels;
  • ground source heat pumps;
  • water source heat pumps;
  • biomass heating system flues; and
  • combined heat and power system flues

on or within the boundaries of non-domestic buildings in Wales.
