Research into the failure to restore opencast coal sites in south Wales

This research examines factors that affect the delivery of successful restoration schemes once open cast coal operations come to an end.

This research looks at the barriers to obtaining successful restoration, including consideration of methods of financing restoration schemes and planning policies and structures.

The research report provides the Welsh Government with estimates of restoration risks and costs at currently working opencast coal sites. The report offers a number of recommendations that may be implemented through the planning system, by local planning authorities and/or the Welsh Government.
