The UK Government has introduced a number of reforms to housing benefit in the private rented sector and the social rented sector.

The changes have had a significant impact on people claiming housing benefit r and from April 2013 there was the introduction of the bedroom tax.

Welfare reform is outside the Welsh Government’s control, so our role is limited to managing the impacts.

We have supported local authorities by making £1.3m available to supplement the money given to local authorities for discretionary housing payments by the UK Government.

The main aims of the funding were:

  • to help more tenants through the discretionary housing payments scheme
  • for local authorities to consider a more holistic approach to how they administer the payments.
