Understanding the experiences of service users, their relatives and carers is a priority.

The Chief Nursing Officer is the lead official for patient experience in the NHS.

Patient experience takes into account patients' needs and preferences, what it is actually like to be a patient in the NHS and how that experience of care can be improved. It includes both clinical and non-clinical care.

Patient experience includes:

  • the success of clinical interventions
  • access
  • responsiveness
  • choice
  • physical environment of care.
