Our plan to improve awareness of neurological conditions and ensure patients get timely, integrated care from health and social services.

Neurological conditions are caused by disease or injury to the body’s nervous system. We think that more than 500,000 people in Wales are affected. Conditions range from headaches and migraines to more serious conditions such as Alzheimer’s Disease.

Our plan will help health boards and other delivery partners to raise awareness of the conditions, quickly diagnose patients, provide fast and effective care, and help people to live with their condition. The plan will also improve the information available on neurological conditions and treatment; as well as help target research into causes, treatments and cures.

The plan is being taken forward by an Implementation Group, including the health service, government and third sector partners. The Group has decided that the immediate focus for Wales should be:

  • Improving awareness among the public and healthcare professionals
  • Assessing the needs of those with the conditions
  • Providing clear information and support to patients and their families
  • Developing consistent neuro-rehabilitation services.
