An independent panel has reviewed how local health boards carry out Individual Patient Funding Requests (IPFR).

This is a request to a health board or the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee to fund NHS healthcare for patients who fall outside the range of services and treatments that a health board routinely provides. This can include a request for any type of healthcare including a specific service, treatment, medicine, device or piece of equipment.

The independent review took account of patients’ views and made recommendations to ensure the process is clear, fair and easily understood.

The Cabinet Secretary for Health, Well-being and Sport made a statement about the review at the National Assembly for Wales on 27 September.

The review group invited patients, their families and carers, healthcare professionals and patient groups to express their views in writing in October and in person in workshops in November 2016.

The review group sent its report to the Cabinet Secretary in January 2017.
