Integrated Coastal Zone Management
In line with our partners we are committed to implementing a holistic joined-up approach to our policy proposals and plans for the marine environment.
The European Union recognises the particular characteristics and management challenges that can occur on seas and coasts. They adopted the Recommendation on Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) 2002, and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008). These offer a comprehensive and integrated approach to the protection of all European coasts and marine waters.
We are working to make sure that the EU Recommendation on ICZM informs our marine policy work. We recognise the need to ensure that we join-up relevant policy areas to develop complementary proposals and plans to help us further improve the way that we manage our coasts. We are using the marine planning process in Wales to understand how best to take forward ICZM.
