The Welsh Government’s Food Division supports the industry to develop and move in positive new directions, embracing new technology and advancements in research and development to put Wales at the forefront of food production.

Towards Sustainable Growth: An Action Plan for the Food and Drink Industry 2014-2020 aims to grow output for the sector by 30% to £7 billion by 2020 and increase the profile and reputation of Welsh food and drink.

The sector has significant impact on the Welsh economy and across wider Welsh society. This includes the health and wellbeing of our communities, economic regeneration, road and rail infrastructure, environment, education and transport.

The Welsh food supply chain is one of Wales’s largest business sectors. Over 170,000 people are employed within the whole food and drink supply chain. The total value of the sector to the Welsh economy, taking into account the agricultural, processing and retail sectors, is estimated to be more than £1 billion per annum.
