The aim of the scheme is for organisations to apply for and gain recognition as a Dairy Producer Organisation (DPO).

The EU Dairy Package allows dairy producers to better organise themselves into Producer Organisations. This will strengthen their position in the dairy supply chain.

Uncertainty over milk prices within the UK has stimulated widespread interest in Producer Organisations and the role that they could potentially play for dairy farmers.

They could offer a way to encourage greater supply chain collaboration, putting farmers on a stronger footing within the supply chain. This would rebalance bargaining power and also develop better more mutually beneficial relationships between all parties across the supply chain.

The Rural Payments Agency (external link) is responsible for recognition of DPOs, throughout the UK, acting on behalf of the Welsh Government.
