On Friday 15 April 2016, Wales Rural Network jointly facilitated an event with Cadwyn Clwyd on the theme of ‘Renewable Energy on a Community Level’  The event took place at a central location in Newtown, Mid Wales.

42 delegates attended the event which was targeted at key LEADER stakeholders involved in developing community renewable energy projects across numerous areas in Wales. The aim of the event was to provide a platform to discuss the way forward for community renewables, to provide an opportunity to develop a strategic approach and to gain information on the funding available through the Welsh Government Rural Communities – Rural Development Plan and other funders.

The event began with a brief introduction by Chris Blake of The Green Valleys Project before moving on with contributions from Keith Jones of the National Trust and Cyd Egni, Robert Proctor of Community Energy Wales and Paul Smith from Ynni Lleol. Following a networking lunch there was late addition to the programme when four students from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Massachusetts delivered a presentation on Advancing Renewable Energy in Wales. Funding opportunities offered by The Community Energy Fund were outlined by Nick Venti and the presentations concluded with an outline of the Rural Communities Development Fund by Gail Merriman of Welsh Government.

After the formal presentation delegates split into groups to discuss possible project ides which could be taken forward. Further details are contained in the report below. A full programme and the presentations delivered at the event can also be accessed below.
