Project description:

The Pilot Community Mapping project aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the St Athan area by working with the local residents, stakeholders and businesses to explore the positive aspects of the area, mapping both the physical assets and the social relationships within the community.

What will the project achieve?

Project objectives

  • To review organisations working in the area and the services they provide.
  • To engage with target groups, hard to reach groups and the wider St Athan community to discover their views on their community, local service provision within the area and how they would like it to develop in the future.
  • To map the physical assets, community resources and activities in the area.
  • To evaluate the process and produce a toolkit to share with other communities in the Vale.
  • To develop an action plan and investigate opportunities to pilot projects through the LEADER programme.

Who are the project beneficiaries?

Although the initial pilot targeted St Athan, other communities in the rural Vale have also benefited by using the draft Community Mapping Toolkit.

What was the result of the project?

The project was completed in March 2017 with the launch of the Community Mapping Toolkit. A video has been produced to share the learning with others and a number of communities have since expressed an interest to explore using the toolkit.

Council officers are using the toolkit to support their community engagement work and have presented the learning to the One Voice Wales meeting of town and community councils in South Wales. Those attending were very positive and keen to find out more.
