Local Planning Authorities are required to consider agricultural land quality when preparing Local Development Plans (LDPs) and deciding planning applications.

As part of this process there is also a requirement that we are consulted on losses of Best and Most Versatile (BMV) agricultural land that may be a matter of national interest.

Planning Policy Wales - chapter 4 paragraph 4.10.1 stresses the importance of conserving Wales’ BMV agricultural land.

Technical Advice Note 6 – Planning for Sustainable Rural Communities (2010), chapter 6 provides guidance on development involving agricultural land. Annex B outlines the consultation arrangement with the Welsh Government on such matters.
