Waste prevention

The waste hierarchy is a system for classifying waste management options according to their environmental impact. At the top of the hierarchy is preventing waste.

When waste is created, the hierarchy gives priority to preparing it for re-use, then recycling, then other recovery such as energy recovery, and last of all disposal, for example landfill.

Waste prevention covers activities that reduce:

  • the amount of waste, including making products that have a longer life span and reusing products
  • the negative impacts of waste created on the environment and human health, by designing products that can be recycled easily and safely
  • the harmful substances in materials and products, by designing products with less harmful properties.

Waste Prevention Programme

We have produced a Waste Prevention Programme for Wales. This describes:

  • our priority sectors and areas for action
  • outlines the work we will do to support individuals, businesses and organisations in Wales to take action.
