Preserving, maintaining and re-establishing a sufficient diversity and area of habitat for wild birds.

Regulation 9A of the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2010 (as amended) (external link), imposes duties on certain public authorities in relation to wild bird habitat.  It also requires those authorities to use all reasonable endeavours to avoid pollution or deterioration of such habitats.

Welsh Ministers are required to give guidance on the steps it would be appropriate to take to comply with Regulation 9A.

We have produced joint guidance (external link) with Defra about protecting the habitats of wild birds.

To support the delivery of the joint guidance the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) was commissioned to produce the BTO Research Report No. 663 (external link). The report collates the evidence for declines across a number of bird species. It also identifies a range of management measures and delivery mechanisms that could be used to improve habitat.

We have also produced an overview document on Regulation 9A and the wider approach to Natural Resources Management in Wales.
