Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea virus

Pig keepers need to be aware of an emerging disease that has caused significant losses to the pig industry overseas.

Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) is a viral disease with clinical signs of diarrhoea and wasting seen in young piglets. It is spread by infected animals and their products and contaminated objects can also be a risk.

PED has caused significant losses in Asia and North America and some other countries.

PED is not a notifiable disease and there is no risk to human health.

A form of this disease has existed in Europe for some years albeit at a low level. A more virulent form of the disease has been identified in the countries above though not as yet in Europe.

Further information, including disease prevention and contingency planning for PED, can be found at Hybu Cig Cymru (external link).

More information on the disease can be found at gov.uk (external link).
