School term dates - regulations

The Education (Wales) Act 2014 includes provisions which change the term date-setting process in Wales.

Local authorities and the governing bodies of voluntary aided and foundation schools must work together when setting term dates in an effort to harmonise those dates across Wales.

Where those term dates are not harmonised, or in rare cases where harmonised dates need to be altered, the Act gives Welsh Ministers to power to direct local authorities and the governing bodies of voluntary aided and foundation schools on what their term dates must be.

The Notification Regulations mean that local authorities must inform the Welsh Ministers of term dates for the school year 2016-17 by the final working day in August 2014.  Below you’ll find the regulations and a template which may be used to notify the Welsh Ministers of term dates.

The Consultation Regulations provide the detail on any consultation process to be undertaken by the Welsh Ministers before use of their term date-setting powers.
