Governing bodies are key to effective school leadership.

There are approximately 23,000 school governors in Wales, one of the largest groups of volunteers in Wales. They have an essential role  in driving continuous improvement, providing support and challenge to the headteacher and senior management team and holding them to account by setting ambitious targets for school improvement and monitoring progress in achieving them.

Their role is a challenging one, but also a highly rewarding one.

We want Wales to be a nation that has the highest aspirations for all of our learners regardless of their background. We have set three priorities of improving levels of literacy, numeracy and reducing the impact of deprivation on these. School Governors are key to achieving this ambition.

We are committed to ensuring that governing bodies have the skills they need to be effective and enable local authorities and school governing bodies to take forward structural options such as federation where this would strengthen schools and support good governance.
