In January 2001 the Assembly Government issued a consultation paper on the development of a National Languages Strategy.

The consultation paper was brought to the attention of all local education authorities; schools; colleges and other important partners. As part of the 2001 European Year of Languages, we held conferences in North and South
Wales at which our draft strategy was discussed.

We met with local education authority language advisers and others to discuss the draft strategy. We received 36 written responses to the document. We are grateful to all partners for their comments.

This document is the National Strategy in its final form. We look forward
to working with partners on its implementation.
