Employment within the hi-tech industries within the EU

A report which examines employment levels in hi-tech industries across the EU 15 countries.

Key points

  • Wales had 135,000 people (or 10.9 per cent of the workforce) employed in hi-tech industries.
  • Within the EU, the countries with the highest percentage of their workforce employed in hi-tech industries were Germany (14.1 per cent) and Sweden (12.6 per cent) with the UK third (11.6 per cent). The lowest were Greece (3.4 per cent) and Portugal (4.5 per cent).
  • The region of the EU with the highest percentage of the workforce employed in hi-tech industries was Stuttgart in Germany (24.7 per cent). The region with the lowest proportion was Kriti in Greece (1.2 per cent).
  • Wales had the second highest percentage of the workforce employed in hi-tech manufacturing (after Germany).
