Destinations of students completing initial teacher education courses

Key points

In 2015/16, there were 790 people known to be teaching in Wales 6 months after obtaining qualified teacher status (QTS) and graduating from a UK Higher Education Institution (HEI).

Of these:

  • 430 were teaching at Primary school level and 305 Secondary.
  • 610 were PGCE students and 180 had studied other degrees.
  • 95 per cent came from Wales and 84 per cent went to a Welsh Higher Education Institution.

In 2015/16, there were 825 people who obtained qualified teacher status from a Welsh Higher Education Institution, for whom their destination was known 6 months after graduation.

Of these:

  • 80 per cent (660) were teaching in Wales; this is up slightly from 76 per cent in 2014/15.
  • 350 were teaching in Wales at Primary school level and 265 were teaching in Wales at Secondary level.

Response rates

Destinations data have been obtained for 85 per cent of those who received qualified teacher status in a Welsh Higher Education Institution. Destinations data have been obtained for 82 per cent of those Welsh domiciles who received qualified teacher status in UK Higher Educations Institutions.
