Next stage of A55 multi-million pound tunnel scheme to begin

This press release was published under the 2011 - 2016 Welsh government

The next stage of the Welsh Government’s multi-million pound investment to improve the safety and resilience of the tunnels on the A55 is set to begin in the Penmaenbach Tunnel next week.
Friday 09 October 2015

The three-year £42m programme, now in its second year, will see a new LED lighting system  installed in the Penmaenbach Tunnel which will improve visibility for drivers and reduce the amount of power used.  Similar lighting systems have already been installed in the Conwy and Pen y Clip tunnels as part of the programme.

The work is carried out during the quietest period on the highway in order to keep disruption to the minimum, with workers on site 24 hours a day seven days a week.  Daytime planned roadworks have been kept to the absolute minimum on the A55 between the end of March and beginning of September, which are the busiest times.

Every effort is made to carry out additional essential maintenance work at the same time as the tunnel refurbishment to reduce any future disruption.  This includes resurfacing the carriageway and replacement of street lighting.

Minister for Transport Edwina Hart said:

“The A55 is crucial for the economy of North Wales.  That is why the Welsh Government is making this multi-million pound investment in the tunnel infrastructure.

“The tunnels on the A55 are feats of engineering and these improvements works will ensure they continue to be safe and resilient, while also reducing the need for any unplanned road closures and the disruption that can bring.”
