This press release was published under the 2011 - 2016 Welsh government

Public Services Minister Leighton Andrews has today (Thursday 10th December) set up a Working Group to advise on the best use of the Welsh language in Local Government Administration and Economic Development.
Thursday 10 December 2015

Chaired by Plaid Cymru AM Rhodri Glyn Thomas, the Group will consider issues raised during the passage of the Local Government (Wales) Act in relation to the Welsh language and Local Government reform.

Public Services Minister Leighton Andrews said:

“The Group will ensure that in the process of merging Local Authorities, we retain and share good practice in the use of Welsh as the language of administration within a Council.

“The Group will also ensure we identify good practice in Local Government which can help Welsh speaking communities flourish, particularly how Local Government can support the Welsh language within the fabric of the community through its economic development functions.”

The remit of the Working Group is to recognise good practice in the areas identified and to make practical recommendations which can be taken forward through the programme of Local Government reform. The recommendations of the Group will inform the drafting of statutory guidance for Transition Committees.

The Group will report by the end of May 2016.
