At the town’s Waterworld Leisure Centre the Minister visited one of the projects to have received support from the Assembly Government’s Invest-to-Save fund.  By installing a Combined Heat and Power unit at the Centre around £18.5k a year of efficiency savings will result alongside a reduction of 55 tonnes of carbon.

The fund is supporting a number of projects across Wrexham that will lead to greater energy efficiency including a replacement programme for boilers, street lights and supporting small carbon and energy efficiency projects.

The schemes in total will deliver around £19million of savings.
Invest-to-Save supports Assembly Government funded public service organisations in transforming the way they work so that they become more efficient.

Finance Minister Jane Hutt said:

“Our Invest-to-Save fund is a great example of public sector efficiency and innovation that will not only bring savings but lead to improved services.

“In this difficult financial climate it is even more important that the Assembly Government continues to find ways to help support the drive for greater public sector efficiency and innovation.

“This project here in Wrexham is an excellent example of what can be achieved.  The combined heat and power plant at Waterworld shows what can be done to reduce CO2 emissions, but also to generate efficiency savings.

“As part of an extensive programme, developed in collaboration with the Carbon Trust, it represents a very positive step by Wrexham County Borough Council in working towards reducing the authority’s carbon footprint, that overall will also deliver efficiency savings of up to £19m by 2015/16.

“I am pleased that the Assembly Government has been able to support the roll out of Wrexham’s Carbon Emission and Energy Use Reduction Programme with Invest-to-Save funding.

“The Assembly Government has through the Invest-to-Save fund provided nearly £35m for schemes across the public sector.  It is encouraging more efficient and innovative ways of working as organisations look to provide improved services for less money.

“Projects such as this one in Wrexham will help protect funding for public services, and also ensure careful stewardship of our environment.”
