GP practice suppliers EMIS and INPS are to provide a managed IT service to the country’s GP surgeries.
It is expected the new agreement will provide more robust, resilient, centrally hosted services, in accordance with the ‘GP Clinical Systems Strategy’. It will also improve service levels for the same level of expenditure as the previous framework .
The main elements of the framework agreement are a Practice Software Service, Data-Centre Hardware and Software, a Drug Database and Utilities – Support & Maintenance & Training. As such, the new, multi-vendor Framework Agreement will cover
- National Coordination and management of the GMS IM&T Budget on behalf of Health Boards through the adoption of a Once for Wales Approach, ensuring that the efficient administration and cost effective provision of IM & T Services is delivered equitably to all GP Practices in Wales.
- A national Framework Agreement to support approved third party products to deliver better value for money and interoperability.
- A new GP System Framework Agreement that improves on the existing framework agreement ensuring competitive pricing, value for money and flexibility in terms of development and procurement of core and additional services.
- Next generation GP Systems which support the NHS in delivering the new primary and community healthcare models.
The Minister for Health and Social Services, Lesley Griffiths said:
“I am pleased to be able to announce the agreement reached between the Welsh NHS and GP practice suppliers EMIS and INPS.
“The multi-vendor framework will enhance the services patients will receive from their GPs.
“It’s not just about IT support, and the convenience of My Health Online, where people can book their own appointments. It’s much more than that.
“This new framework will enable e-referrals, where information is sent quickly, securely, and is clear and consistent. And it works the other way, too. Results can be emailed between consultant and general practitioner. It’s more cost effective, and most importantly, safer for patients.
“The choice of vendors on this framework means GPs will be able to find tailor their suppliers to meet their needs following a fair and open selection process.”
