Appointment of Independent Member to Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University and Hywel Dda Local Health Boards

Health Minister Lesley Griffiths announced the appointment of Chantal Patel and Mike Ponton as independent members to the boards of Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Local Health Board and Hywel Dda Local Health Board respectively.

Both appointments are for a four year term ending on 31 March 2016. Chantal Patel will receive a remuneration of £15,936 per annum for a time commitment of four days a month. Mike Ponton will receive a remuneration of £13,344 per annum for a time commitment of four days a month.

The Minister said:

“I am delighted that Chantal Patel and Mike Ponton have decided to use their skills to contribute to the NHS. The experience of these board members will help us as we implement the changes necessary to meet the challenges facing the NHS in Wales, as outlined in our five-year vision for the NHS in Wales, Together for Health.”

Local Health Boards (LHBs) are responsible for planning, designing, developing and securing the delivery of primary, community, in-hospital care services, and where appropriate specialised services for the citizens in their respective areas to meet identified local needs within the national policy and standards framework set out by the Minister.

Chantal Patel:
Chantal Patel is a Lecturer in Health care law and ethics who lectures to all health groups as well as sitting on a number of university committees. Mrs Patel is currently Head of Inter-Professional studies situated within the college of health and human sciences. Mrs Patel is secretary to the Indian Society of South West Wales as well as a Justice of Peace in adult court for HMCS Magistrates court Swansea. Mrs Patel is also a Governor of Gower college and a board member of the Grwp Gwalia which provide a range of housing to low income tenants. In addition to this she was a board member of Swansea NHS Trust.  She holds no other Ministerial public appointments.

Mike Ponton:
Mike Ponton is currently a board member and trustee of a number of organisations (Age Concern, Wellbeing Wales and the Institute of Rural Health), a retired senior fellow of the Welsh Institute for Health and Social Care University of Glamorgan. Mr Ponton was the director of the Welsh NHS Confederation and the head of health promotion, and subsequently director of health policy and development for the Welsh Government, as well as a history of NHS Management throughout England and Wales, which began in 1962. He holds no other Ministerial public appointments.
