Environment Minister John Griffiths has visited the Crest Co-operative in Llandudno Junction. He was given a tour of the Crest Community Store, Crest’s workshop, the textile department and food poverty project FareShare North Wales.

FareShare North Wales redistributes quality surplus food from the food industry to disadvantaged community organisations across Conwy and Denbighshire.

Earlier this month the Minister announced £685,000 funding to support FareShare Cymru’s plans for development across Wales. FareShare North Wales will receive £70,000 of this funding to upgrade its chilled and frozen food storage capacity.

Speaking during his visit the Minister said:

“Projects like this show how businesses can work with community groups to reduce waste and help disadvantaged groups.

“The Welsh Government has ambitious targets for Wales to recycle 70% of its waste by 2025 and be a zero waste nation by 2050. This will enable us to reap the social and economic benefits that come with being a high recycling society.

“Earlier this year I visited FareShare’s Cardiff depot and this morning’s visit has been just as interesting. Organisations like FareShare and Crest play an important role in the community and I encourage food producers and retailers to consider the potential benefits of engaging with them.”

FareShare established a site in North Wales in September 2010, providing deliveries of high quality food to disadvantaged groups. The fit for purpose food is donated by suppliers including large supermarkets and local food companies. This food would otherwise be destined for landfill.

Crest and FareShare work with retail distribution centres, wholesales and manufacturers to help feed hundreds of disadvantaged and vulnerable people.

Supporting waste reduction and re-use initiatives in collaboration with businesses is a Programme for Government key action for living within environmental limits.
