It is proposed that the new development will operate as an annex to the 3-18 school in Ystalyfera.

The 650 place 11-16 secondary school will cater for increasing demand from existing Welsh primary schools in the south of the county and will be built on the site of the former Sandfields Comprehensive.

Funding has been allocated as part of the 21st Century Schools and Education Programme, a unique collaboration between the Welsh Government, the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) and local authorities with the aim of creating a generation of 21st century schools in Wales.

Cabinet Secretary for Education, Kirsty Williams, said:

“This is another example of our 21st Century Schools and Education Programme focusing resources on the right schools in the right places.

“The Local Authority only currently has one Welsh medium secondary school in the north of the county. This money will address the region’s growing demand for Welsh medium education and significantly reduce travel for some pupils.”

Neath Port Talbot Local Authority have been awarded £10.69 million against a total project cost of £17.05 million.
