The building has been recognised as one of the leading local authority archives in the UK. It houses the local archive service for the City and County of Cardiff, the county borough councils of Bridgend, Merthyr Tydfil, the Vale of Glamorgan, and Rhondda Cynon Taff and part of Caerphilly CBC, which is funded jointly by the six local authorities.

Facilities at the centre, which opened to the public in February 2010, includes a search room where the public can consult original archival documents, public access computer facilities, and meeting rooms which can be used by the local community. The service also hosts regular visits from primary and secondary schools, and higher education students, organises workshops for the public to help them to research their family history and supports community archive projects

The Minister said:

"I am very impressed with the new Glamorgan Archives centre, it’s a prime example of local authorities working together to provide an excellent service to local residents and those who are visiting the area to trace their family history. It is particularly pleasing to see school children and the local community involved in projects established by the centre and finding out more about the history of their local area."

The building also provides state of the art repository facilities that meet recommended standards for archival storage and that holds extensive archive collections relating to all aspects of life in the Glamorgan area from the 12th century to the present day . The expanded conservation studio is also able to undertake a wide-range of conservation and preservation activities.
