Showcasing the best of Wales’ construction sector in Dubai

This press release was published under the 2011 - 2016 Welsh government

A Welsh Government multi-sector trade mission takes off from Cardiff Airport this weekend for Dubai with ten of the fifteen companies exhibiting at The Big 5 – the largest trade show for the construction industry in the Middle East.

Construction is booming across the region, especially in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, with more major projects planned during the next decade.

With more than 80,000 people expected to attend the event, this trade show (21-27 November) provides Welsh companies with an excellent opportunity to showcase their products and services and exploit new export opportunities to the region.

The UAE is currently Wales’ largest export market, worth over £1.2billion to the Welsh economy. Further Welsh Government missions to the market are planned in the next few months, including Arab Health and Gulf Food.

Economy Minister Edwina Hart said:

“With its flourishing economy, Dubai is a highly attractive and increasingly important market for Wales, especially as it is also a major hub for product distribution throughout the Middle East.

“As a pro-business Government we recognise the importance of exporting and our overseas missions are tailored to help businesses make the most of all the opportunities presented.

“This trade mission provides Welsh companies operating across a number of our key sectors with the ideal platform to showcase their products and services on an international stage and exploit the significant business growth opportunities offered by the Middle East.”

One of the Welsh companies exhibiting on the Wales stand is Zip-Clip. The company manufactures high-specification suspension systems for the construction industry and the Gulf is a key market for their products.

Steve Goldsworthy, Zip-Clip CEO, explains:

“Exporting has helped our business grow, and the Gulf, in particular the UAE and Qatar, are key markets for us. Attending Big 5 ensures that we maintain our profile in the market and meet key business contacts from across the region. Participating in the Welsh Governments trade mission and exhibition programme has helped us to exhibit at the Big 5 and conduct follow up meetings, opening the door to a whole new range of opportunities in a fast growing market.”

Another company exhibiting is Eurobond Laminates Ltd, who specialise in the design and manufacture of stone wool core panel systems that provide superior fire and environmental performance.

Simon Thomas, the Managing Director said:

“Exporting has been important to growing our business, and we are looking to increase this further. With the number of construction projects across the Gulf, in particular the UAE, we see this region as a key market for our products. We attended Big 5 last year and made some excellent contacts and are returning with the help of the Welsh Government to follow up and raise our profile.”

During the trade mission companies will be given a market briefing by the Welsh Government’s office in Dubai and attend a business reception organised by UKTI.
