Thursday 31 December 2015

Economy Minister, Edwina Hart announced the awards in the latest round of funding under the Welsh Government’s Enterprise Zone Business Rates Scheme, which provides financial support for business rates liabilities incurred by small and medium-sized businesses located in Welsh Enterprise Zones

Since 2012, the scheme has supported 198 businesses with over £9 million of funding. The latest awards are part of a fourth round of the scheme for the 2015/16 financial year.

In North Wales, thirty one companies from the Deeside Enterprise Zone have received a total of £598,165 in rates support and nine companies in the Anglesey Enterprise Zone have received £144,000. In West Wales, sixteen companies in the Haven Waterway Enterprise Zone have been awarded £189,926. In South Wales, five businesses in the Ebbw Vale Enterprise Zone have received £216, 402 and one business in St Athan has received £37,583.

Mrs Hart said:

“Our commitment to providing the right conditions for businesses to flourish and grow in Wales is unwavering. The Enterprise Zone Business Rates Scheme has proved very popular and helped create growth and jobs within the Zones. To date nearly 200 companies within the Enterprise Zones have benefitted from our business rates scheme and I am very pleased to announce this latest tranche of funding. Together, with an extension to the Small Business Rates Relief Scheme, we are reducing costs for businesses across Wales.”

Two companies which have directly benefitted from this scheme are Express Contract Drying in Ebbw Vale and Always Aim High Events Ltd, which is based in Anglesey.

Express Contract Drying is the largest toll spray dryer of food flavours and colours in the UK, with customers throughout Europe.  It currently has two sites, one in Ebbw Vale which operates with 48 staff and another in Tregaron, Mid Wales, which employs a further 20 people.

The company’s Director, Mr Nick Ball said:

“The support we have received from the Welsh Government and being part of an Enterprise Zone has greatly assisted us in recent years. It has allowed us to work more closely with our customers on R&D [Research and Development] and improving the quality of the finished product.

“Furthermore, in January 2016 we are taking on a further 10,000 sq. ft. of industrial unit space adjacent to our current production facility. Our plan is to use this for further dried food flavour production and to possibly offer a spray crystallisation product which would be a new product to add to our portfolio. Obviously with the installation of this new equipment we will be looking to employ new staff. So 2016 will see more expansion from Express Contract Drying and the Welsh Government’s assistance has been instrumental in this."

Always Aim High Events Ltd organises ultimate sporting challenges including triathlons, running and cycling events, set against the scenic north Wales landscape.

The company’s Director, Mr Nigel Kenrick, said:

“We are very pleased to have benefitted from the Wales Enterprise Zone Business Rate Scheme. The initiative has encouraged to us establish our Head Office in the heart of Anglesey and along with other complimentary businesses we have established The Events Hub, a complete events delivery solution. Employing ten full time skilled individuals we will host events and services world wide and will bring over £7 million of economic benefit to Wales in 2016.”
