The wings for the A320 series are made at the company’s Broughton facility in Flintshire and AirAsias's order for 64 of the A320neo and 36 of the A320ceo aircraft will safeguard 1,500 Airbus jobs in the UK and 7,500 in its supply chain.

First Minister Carwyn Jones said:

" This is excellent news and another important boost for the Airbus Broughton facility - an acknowledged centre of manufacturing excellence and a key employment site in Wales.

“I would like to congratulate Airbus on securing this significant contract that will safeguard hundreds of well paid high quality jobs in North Wales.”

Business Minister Edwina Hart said:

" This is another vote of confidence in the skilled workforce at Broughton and great news for Wales. Aerospace makes a major contribution to the Welsh economy and forms a key component of our Advanced Materials and Manufacturing priority sector.

“Wales makes a significant contribution to the UK aerospace industry and punches well above its weight with over 20,000 direct employees working across a diverse range of aerospace subsectors."

Airbus has been given anchor company status by the Welsh Government in recognition of its strategic importance to the Welsh economy.

The growth and expansion of the Broughton site has been strongly supported by the Welsh Government which has provided £28.66 million to develop its composite wing capability and advanced manufacturing skills. This included £14.83 million for the development of the North Factory Buildings which will be used to assemble the composite wings for the A350 XWB series of planes.
