The £215,000 repayable business finance funding from the Welsh Government will ensure the project will be produced in Wales and secures £4.2million to the Welsh economy.

The series will be filmed on location in Aberystwyth and Ceredigion with post production to be carried out in Cardiff, generating significant spend in both Welsh regions.

Richard Harrington (Lark Rise to Candleford, Bleak House, Spooks, Pen Talar) stars as the lead character Detective Inspector Tom Mathias with Mali Harries (Indian Doctor, Pen Talar, Baker Boys, Caerdydd) his partner D.S. Mared Rhys.

It is anticipated the drama’s association with Aberystwyth and the surrounding area will boost tourism in the region.

Business Minister Edwina Hart said:

"This is another great opportunity for the creative industries sector in Wales to showcase the available talent and expertise in Wales.

"I am particularly pleased to see that Hinterland will offer a range of employment and work opportunities for young talent in Wales while the entire production will also create economic benefits for a range of businesses, including hospitality and tourism."

Filming began in November 2012 with English and Welsh language versions of the programme being produced simultaneously. The Welsh language version - entitled Mathias - will be broadcast on S4C in autumn 2013, with the English language version screening on BBC Wales in spring 2014.

International sales are being handled by All3Media, one of the UK’s leading Distributors.

The contemporary drama, produced by Fiction Factory will provide employment for 80 freelance personnel across a twelve month period, equivalent to 55 full time posts, and provide employment and training opportunities for young talent tin Wales. The production is to link up with Skillset Media Academy and Aberystwyth University to provide placements, work opportunities for emerging practitioners.

Hinterland Films Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fiction Factory Ltd, one of Wales' most successful independent production companies.
