Data and summaries for each of the national well-being indicators.

The national indicators are designed to represent the outcomes for Wales, and its people that will help demonstrate progress towards the 7 well-being goals. They are not intended to be performance indicators for an individual organisation.

The Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 required Welsh ministers to set national indicators to assess progress towards achieving the 7 wellbeing goals. These national indicators were laid before the Senedd in 2021. A full description of the national indicators including their technical definition and information about their data sources and frequency can be found in the technical document.

The indicators are updated throughout the year as new data becomes available. To help you navigate these links we have highlighted the links between indicators and goals.

The annual ‘Wellbeing of Wales’ report provides an update on progress made in Wales towards the achievement of the 7 well-being goals, making reference to the national indicators alongside other relevant data. From 2022 reference will also be made to the first national milestones. National milestones set expectations of what the indicators should show at certain points in the future.

Many national indicators will help tell a story of progress in Wales against more than one of the Well-being Goals or United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. To help you navigate these, a tool has been developed. To use this tool, you can select one or more Wellbeing Goal or United Nations Sustainable Development Goal and it will show you the indicators that map to your selections.

The Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 is unique legislation to Wales. The Act provides a framework for us in Wales to be globally responsible and make a positive contribution to these global goals. It puts in place wellbeing goals, addressing many of these global challenges that are felt by people and communities across Wales. These seven wellbeing goals will be measured through the national indicators. These mappings should not be considered as inferring a direct or indirect technical or legal link between the indicators, wellbeing goals and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
