Definition: Coning and dividing - A method used to homogenize powdered materials prior to taking a sample. The powder is mixed on a clean flat surface, pushed into a tall conical pile, and then divided into sections that are then mixed thoroughly one pile at a time. The parts are pushed together, mixed, and the process repeated as needed.
