Definition: Strictly speaking, the period (1811-1820) during which the future George IV took over from his father the 'mad' George III and acted as Regent (ie reigning in the place of the King). Generally, in architecture, the term is taken to mean the period from the 1790s to about 1840. It is therefore synonymous with 'late Georgian', and embraces the reign of William IV and the first few years of Queen Victoria's reign.
