Our Action Plan for Education in Wales (Our national mission)
Huw Lewis, Minister for Education and Skills

In October 2014 I launched Qualified for Life – An Education Improvement Plan for Wales.

This plan built on the previously published Improving Schools Plan and sets out our vision and aims for education to 2020. Our vision is underpinned by 4 strategic objectives along with associated actions to support education improvements.

Theses 4 strategic aims are:

  1. An excellent professional workforce with strong pedagogy based on an understanding of what works
  2. A curriculum which is engaging and attractive to children and young people and which develops within them an independent ability to apply knowledge and skills
  3. The qualifications young people achieve are nationally and internationally respected and act as a credible passport to their future learning and employment
  4. Leaders of education at every level working together in a self-improving system, providing mutual support and challenge to raise standards in all schools.

Today, I am publishing a report card which measures progress against our plan. A number of key polices and actions have been implemented to support our reform agenda. However, the impact these have on our learners is the crucial test. I am delighted to report that we have made improvements across foundation phase, key stage 2, key stage 3 and key stage 4 – increasing the life chances of our children and young people. We have also narrowed the poverty attainment gap at every key stage of statutory education.
