Written Statement - ‘Light Springs through the Dark: A Vision for Culture in Wales’

Ken Skates, Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure

Today, I am issuing a detailed statement on culture.  I am doing so to reinforce the importance of culture, and to prompt more debate about how we can work together to nurture, promote and enjoy our culture.

‘Light Springs through the Dark: A Vision for Culture in Wales’ details my ambitions for culture in this Assembly term.  It describes how, as well as enriching our lives, cultural organisations and practitioners are helping to address a range of other policy agendas.  It sets out what we as a government will be doing to help this important sector to thrive.

The statement celebrates our many cultural attractions, our outstanding collections and the vibrant, bilingual offer that our best creative talents are producing.  It seeks to build on the high levels of attendance at and participation in cultural pursuits.  But it also challenges the culture sector to continue improving in several areas, such as income generation, and exploiting digital technology.

It also calls on local authorities to maintain their support for culture and for the cultural sponsored bodies to encourage their clients to contribute to the health, education, regeneration and tackling poverty agendas, as well as to do more to help the sector to diversify its income.
